Dr. Wendy Pearlman is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University. She earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University, a MA from Georgetown University, and a BA from Brown University.

While headlines from Syria frequently splash across the news, we rarely hear personal accounts from Syrians themselves. Wendy Pearlman’s stirring book, We Crossed a Bridge and it Trembled: Voices from Syria (Custom House, 2017), long-listed for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence, changes that.

From 2012 to 2016, Pearlman interviewed hundreds of Syrian refugees across the Middle East and Europe, collecting testimonials from ordinary people transformed by revolution, war, and displacement. A breathtaking mosaic of these intimate, first-hand narratives, We Crossed a Bridge and it Trembled forms a testament not only to the power of storytelling, but also to the resilience of those who face darkness with hope, courage, and moral conviction.
