Suitcase: The Power We Carry

  • Swift Elementary Specialty School 5900 N Winthrop Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60660 (map)

SUITCASE: The Power We Carry is an art gallery organized by and for immigrant and refugee youth with the goal of providing a creative space for us to honor, share, create, and re/learn our histories as immigrant and refugee youth.

SUITCASE: The Power We Carry challenges and transforms the idea of who holds power through the image of a suitcase. In highlighting the suitcase, we are centering the power that we as immigrants and refugees carry with us in our literal and our metaphorical suitcases. The power we carry through migration is our stories, our lived experiences, and our ability to come up with solutions for the issues that affect our communities.

SUTICASE: The Power We Carry is KINETIC’s fourth annual art gallery featuring art from immigrant and refugee youth artists. Last year, our event was held at Axis Lab in Uptown. We featured 50 CPS student artists and had over 250 students, parents, and community members attend the event. This year, the gallery will be held in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

If you’re interested in contributing art this year, visit www.tinyurl.com/SUITCASEGallery to find our Call for Artists. If you have any questions, email our gallery co-chairs Georgette & Angela (bboateng67@gmail.com & asuarezprieto42@student.oprfhs.org).
